FRIDAY MARCH 2ND: Taína Asili
On FRIDAY March 2nd, 2012 at 8pm, Taína Asili will premier on the stage of The Gallery in Stamford, NY with her dynamic SIX PIECE international ensemble. Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde will perform an energetic fusion of Afro-Caribbean, reggae, and rock sounds. The music represents the diverse origins of Puerto Rican vocalist Taina Asili
and band members: Sicilian guitarist Gaetano Vaccaro, Greek drummer Kiki Vassilakis, Brazlian/Australian bassist Sean Muniz and Ghanaian master drummer Saeed Abbas. Taína Asili y La Banda Rebelde's songs combine a high-energy sound
that spans continents and heartfelt lyrics, sung in English, Spanish, Portuguese and kiSwahili, inspiring listeners to dance to the movement of rebellion. Bob Goepfert, from the Troy Record writes, "Her vocals penetrate your heart, the lyrics stir your conscience, the melodies are soothing and the rhythms are contagious."
They will feature music from their debut album War Cry released last year. Journalist Josh Potter of The Metroland, Albany, NY's alternative newsweekly, describes War Cry as "a pan-global roots-musical mélange that appeals to the struggle of tradition to envision a world of social justice." During Taína Asili 15-year career of creating music for social change she has toured the country several times, performed in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain, and has released five albums internationally with previous bands (Antiproduct/Ricanstruction). Taína Asili has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Ursula Rucker, Sonia Sanchez, Paula Cole, Talib Kweli, and Tyrone Hill of the Sun Ra orchestra.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 6TH / 8 PM CONCERT " SIDESTEP" ECLECTIC
-Sidestep is the name Ken Lovelett, Vincent Pasternak and Barbara Truex use when they perform together as a trio. The three have been making music in various contexts in recording studios and on stage for over thirty years. Each musician brings multiple instruments and experience playing a wide range of musical genres to their collaboration. In concert Sidestep offers a satisfying mix of original songs and compositions along with their unique interpretations of material by the likes of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, folk songs, jazz standards, and even classical compositions. Their easy rapport with one another and with the audience makes every concert seem like a gathering of friends. A Sidestep concert is much like listening to an excellent free form radio show, with seamless segues taking you on a journey that might begin with a Celtic folk song driven by a dulcimer before flying down to Barcelona for some nylon string guitar, then improvising across the ocean on waves of percussion before landing on a familiar song by Dylan made new by a stunning viola solo. Call it Folk-Jazz; call it World Fusion; call it Chamber Music for the Twenty-First Century. Whatever you call it, Sidestep delights all ages and can be appreciated by anyone with open ears.
SIDESTEP was formed in the 1970s with a core membership consisting of Ken Lovelett, Vincent Pasternak and Barbara Truex. Collectively they had an exceptionally broad array of musical training and interests to draw upon, including classical, rock, jazz, folk, samba and more. Each was involved performing and recording with various other bands and solo artists but also wanted a flexible outlet for the full spectrum of their own songs and compositions. Sidestep functioned, one might say, as a creators' collective.
Where other musical groups learn a body of material, which they then perform over and over in performances, Sidestep choose a very different path. They would self-produce singular concert/events to showcase a particular group of material or explore a given theme. These concerts often incorporated guest musicians, not to mention dancers, poets and painters. A Sidestep performance might consist of an essentially acoustic quartet or an eight-piece band with multiple synthesizers and a rock guitarist. On more than one occasion they would pass percussion instruments through the audience and lead a group improvisation. Each of these unique events enabled the members to work through (and generally document via field recordings) some of their more ambitious musical ideas. Over time the members of Sidestep moved to various other locations and found other outlets of musical expression.
KEN LOVELETT creates, builds and plays his own unique percussion and sound instruments. He is co-owner and producer of Sonart Recording Studio, which is located in Mt. Tremper, New York. Ken 's percussion sounds can by heard on works as diverse as The Ghost of Tom Joad (Bruce Sprinstein and Pete Seeger) and Green Sparrow (a solo album by Mike Gordon, the bassist from Phish). Ken has appeared on records or in live performances for artists and groups that have included James Taylor, David Bromberg, John Wesley Harding, Karl Berger, Joe Beck, Warren Bernhardt, Lou Soloff, Livingston Taylor, REM, and The Memphis Symphony Orchestra. You can learn more about Ken's work by visiting www.americanpercussion.com.
BARBARA TRUEX plays dulcimer, baritone and banjo ukuleles, guitar, and percussion. She is nationally recognized for her innovative use of dulcimer in genres that include jazz, pop, and free improvisation. Truex lives in Maine, performing with groups that have included the world fusion band Loopin' and The Maine Squeeze, an accordion ensemble. Truex recently composed an original score for Waiting for a Window, a radio play that won the prestigious Gold Ogle Award. A performing musician since the 1960's, Truex has been active in a wide range of musical genres and contexts. She is recognized as an innovator for her use of the dulcimer in jazz, pop, free improvisational music and other settings beyond the familiar folk and traditional realms. She has extensive experience working with dance and theater ensembles, both as a composer and on stage musical accompanist. As a recording artist Ms. Truex has been involved with many projects for other artists as well as her own solo and group releases. She was elected to the Maine Arts Commission Touring Artist Roster in 1996. An interdisciplinary jury reviewed the audition; the jury's comments included: "clean, innovative transitions from one song to another; accomplished originality on dulcimer."Truex currently performs regularly with The Maine Squeeze, Sidestep and in various other settings that include folk, jazz and world music. In 2008 she formed a group called The Cane Gang which specializes in performing music on instrument walking sticks and canes, both antique and new. VINCENT PASTERNAK is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and session musician who has had a long career playing and/or producing sessions for hundreds of radio and television commercials as well as albums of every stripe and flavor: folk, blues, jazz, rock & roll, Americana, classical, religious, spoken word, a children's record series, and last but not least, an impossible to find 45RPM cult favorite by The Clams that pays homage to the legendary Spike Jones. Clam members include a trio of New York jazz & rock legends that include keyboard/synth player Pete Levin (Paul Simon, Annie Lenox, Gil Evans, Carly Simon), bassist Tony Levin (David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, John Lennon/Yoko Ono, Warren Zevon), and drummer/percussionist Steve Gadd (James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, Ringo Starr).Based in Providence, RI, Vincent has performed with The Bad Band, FolksTogether, JP Jones, the Zimmermen. He has accompanied singer/songwriter Marjorie Thompson as the opening act for New Hot Tuna, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Geoff Muldaur. Currently Pasternak is performing with Rob Carlson as part of The Benefit Street Band. He is completing work on an album of original tracks entitled Barcelona Note Book. He is joined on the album by his Sidestep cohorts Ken Lovelett and Barbara Truex as well as Pete and Tony Levin, trombonist Roswell Rudd, flautist Ali Ryerson, tenor saxophonist Ralph LaLama, bansuri flute master Steve Gorn, and jazz vocalist Nicole Pasternak. Two years ago Lovelett, Pasternak and Truex were asked to perform under the Sidestep name for a benefit concert in New York City held at the Dicapo Opera Theatre. It proved to be an astonishing evening of music. With three acts on the bill the concert lasted over three hours and yet the audience wouldn't let the musicians leave the stage, demanding three encores. Inspired by this Lovelett, Pasternak and Truex became interested in once more revisiting the material they originally developed for those early Sidestep concerts.
